 In the first of the series, Aleks Subic, Chair of the 4GU Community Board, shares his global experience from his roles as President of Aston University in the UK, Chair of a forum at the Global Federation of Competitiveness Councils, and a member of the Australian Prime Minister's Industry 4.0 Taskforce. Attendees will also have the chance to ask questions.

Shruti Desai
Senior Manager, 4GU Community Engagement
Shruti joined Elsevier in 2013, as part of the start-up Mendeley where she worked as Community Manager and Storyteller. Her background includes launching the successful Science and Society Programme at the Max Planck Institute for Cell Biology and Genetics in Germany, where she was responsible for connecting the work and people of the new institute to the local population.
Most recently, Shruti has been working in Elsevier’s Research Marketing team as Global Partnerships Manager, serving as the conduit between university rankings organizations and Elsevier. She brings this experience to her current role helping university leaders connect and create a community of practice through the 4th Generation University Community engagement program.

Aleks Subic
Professor Subic joined Aston University in August 2022 as Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive. He is a recognised global leader in technology and innovation in higher education, leading on Industry 4.0 strategy and digital transformations across the university sector and with industry and governments both in Australia and internationally. He has received a number of prestigious awards for his work, including the Australian Business Innovation Award and the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame Award.

He is a passionate and lifelong advocate for multiculturalism, equity, diversity and inclusion, leading through clear actions and strategic initiatives at enterprise level. These include creating and appointing the first Dean of STEMM Diversity & Inclusion in Australia, establishing Women in STEMM Fellowships and mentoring scheme, Indigenous Research Fellowships, scholarships and internships programs, and creating an innovation precinct with start-up accelerators and industry incubators focused on founders from diverse backgrounds and access.
