Prof. Salem is an ecologist and one of the founders of the department of Environmental sciences, at the Faculty of Science –Alexandria University. This department is dedicated to interdisciplinary education and research in Alexandria University. Prof. Salem is specialized in sustainability science, remote sensing and GIS applications in arid environments.
Prof. Salem has obtained her Ph.D. from the Imperial College London jointly, with Alexandria University in 1989 in remote sensing and GIS applications in Egyptian deserts. Upon her return, Prof. Salem established a Remote Sensing lab in her department where she carried out thoroughly investigations of the entire Ecology and sustainable development of Northwestern coastal land of Egypt. This lab serves in teaching, training and research for graduate and post graduate students.
Prof. Salem Obtained two post-doctoral studies from the University of London, UK in 1994 in GIS applications and from University of Maryland , USA in electronic databases in 1996. She obtained a certificate of Master class in “Sustainability Transformations” from Sustainability Transformations- Academy, Germany 2012 as well as a sustainability transformation change project from Sweden 2012. She is one of the national change agents that has the mission to produce new generation of students with skills of critical thinking, and problem solving . she was able through her work to demonstrate the connection between action and learning, and the way that universities can model sustainable ways of working for the wider community
On the national level, Prof. Salem acted for 10 years as the reporter of the national UNESCO/MAB (Man and Biosphere) committee. The mandate of this committee is to ensure the implementation of sustainable development and conservation of natural resources in selected areas recognized internationally by UNESCO as biosphere reserves. Other activities include establishment of protected areas, cultural heritage sites, ecotourism activities, and education of sustainable development.
Prof. Salem attended all the national courses of Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Education that was organized by the national Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Education (NAQAAE), and became a national external reviewer of Egyptian universities in Science disciplines.
For the period of 3 years, starting January 2017 Prof. Salem was appointed as the university president consultant for international relations and she established a strategic planning document for international relations at Pharos University in Alexandria. She also acted as the Vice president for Graduate studies and research where she was responsible for setting up new postgraduate programs in different disciplines with clear bylaws, terms and conditions for students’ intake. During that time, she was also responsible for the university international ranking status, and action plans to get the university recognised where the university was placed for the first time in international ranking systems.
Starting September 2021, Prof. Salem started and till current administration work at Alexandria University, where the University president welcomed her back to her home university and directly appointed her to be the deputy of the international relations office and the president assistant for international university ranking and university spokeswomen in international visits and events. Prof. Salem is currently the main data and information provider of the university for different international ranking bodies such as THE, QS, Webometrics and others.
After successfully accomplished Scopus and SciVal courses by Elsevier international during the period 2021-2022, Prof. Salem became an expert by certification in Research intelligence and research analytics. She took the role of transferring this knowledge to her colleagues and students through lectures and training workshops.
On the regional level, Prof. Salem was the Executive Director of the ArabMAB network (an Arab regional UNESCO- MAB network), she established several protected areas in the Arab region, and represents a well-known figure at UNESCO in the implementation of the MAB ( Man and Biosphere) program. She is distinguished with her scientific excellence in sustainable development science and practice.
On the international level, Prof. Salem was one of two Arab members and the only Arab Women member of the international Advisory committee of Biosphere reserves, UNESCO- HQ. Currently, Prof. Salem is the only Arab (Women) member of the International Jury for the UNESCO-Loreal Science Prize and UNESCO Science Prize, the only women from Arab countries who contributed in the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) (2003-2005). She was selected in her personal capacity to be one of the authors of the Desertification Synthesis report of the MA, she is also the only Arab women member for three complete rounds (6 years) of the Committee of strategic and planning committee of ICSU (International Council for Scientific Union) – Paris.
On the 24th International coordinating council (ICC) of the MAB and Biosphere Programme –of UNESCO, Prof. Salem has been elected by the representatives members of 24 delegations as the president of the international UNESCO Programme, and she is the first women ever to hold the responsibility of this position throughout the entire history of the UNESCO science Programme of the Man and the Biosphere (MAB)- Paris.
In March 2013, U.S. Ambassador Anne Patterson recognized her outstanding contributions as an Egyptian scientist in March 12, in a reception co-hosted by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the U.S. Consulate General in Alexandria. Ambassador Patterson inducted Alexandria University Professor Dr. Boshra Salem into the US State Department’s 2013 Women in Science Hall of Fame for the Middle East and North Africa.
